How to Overcome Your Deepest Fears Through Lucid Dreaming | Dream Expert Charlie Morley
Epizódok
Lucid dreaming teacher Charlie Morley joins me to talk about the roughly two hours a night, around a twelfth of our lives, that we spend dreaming. Charlie has spent close to 20 years teaching people how to lucid dream, lived in a Buddhist temple for seven years, and received a Winston Churchill Fellowship to research PTSD treatment in military veterans. The turning point came at 17, when an overdose and a near-death experience left him with four months of nightmares that ended in a single lucid dream. What we explore together: •Why nightmares keep coming back, and why waking yourself up from one is "like a therapy session cut short" •How to remember your dreams, even if you think you never dream •What actually changes in the brain the moment you realise you're dreaming •Charlie's own pilot study, where over 85% of people with PTSD no longer met the diagnostic threshold after a six-day lucid dreaming workshop, and why the lucid dream itself can't be isolated as the cause •Is lucid dreaming safe, who shouldn't try it, and why you shouldn't face severe trauma alone •The four foundations to start tonight: dream planning, dream recall, the dream diary and dream signs •Slow breathing, yoga nidra, and why good sleep starts in the daytime Love, Sarah Ann 💛 My book 'Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Healthy-Shouldnt-Be-This-Hard-ebook/dp/B0G1DHNRV5 Let's be friends! 📷 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarahannmacklin/ 📹 Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/@livewellbewellsarah 🐦 Twitter: https://x.com/SarahAnnMacklin 📱 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@livewellbewellpodcast Charlie Morley: 🌐 Website and books: https://charliemorley.com 📷 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charlie_morley_lucid_dreaming/ 📹 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CharlieMorley Chapters 00:00 Trailer 01:18 Introduction: we spend a twelfth of our lives dreaming 02:13 REM sleep isn't rest: you burn calories when you dream 03:53 What is lucid dreaming? 04:28 Why nightmares keep coming back: a therapy session cut short 05:40 "I never remember my dreams": how to start remembering 08:01 Vivid dreams, waking up anxious and why you should write nightmares down 10:19 What is a nightmare? Louise O'Neill, award-winning author, joins me to talk about A Bigger Life, her memoir of the devastating breakup she went through, and the year that followed: a dating odyssey from Dublin to Paris, London, New York and Rome, with a different date almost every night. What we explore together: •Why rejection cuts so deep, and the belief so many of us carry: "I need to improve myself because I'm not lovable enough" •The myth that there are no good men left, and how the algorithm feeds scarcity after a breakup •Her worst dates, from a catfish in France to a frightening walk in Central Park •Why "do I like them?" is a better question than "do they like me?" •Falling back in love, and how a relationship can show you where you still need to heal Love, Sarah Ann 💛 My book 'Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Healthy-Shouldnt-Be-This-Hard-ebook/dp/B0G1DHNRV5 This episode is sponsored by: POLSEN HEALTH: The compassionate health tracker. Your brain isn't broken. It might just be swimming upstream. This week I'm joined by Sarah Warley, Founder of BeBright and The Key Clinic, for a deep dive into ADHD, autism, and the "post-diagnostic gap," because after years of watching families get handed a label with no map for what comes next, she built the clinic to answer the question nobody else was asking: what's actually driving the symptoms? What we explore together: •Why understanding what's actually driving your symptoms matters more than the diagnosis itself •The neurodiversity clusters: ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and why almost no one fits neatly into just one •Why labels can be both a relief and a trap, and how to know which one you're in •Retained primitive reflexes from infancy that quietly shape adult anxiety, focus and coordination •Why the "Great ADHD Myth" documentary got the debate dangerously wrong •What neurodivergent burnout actually looks like, and why it hits the highest achievers hardest Love, Sarah Ann 💛 My book 'Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Healthy-Shouldnt-Be-This-Hard-ebook/dp/B0G1DHNRV5 This episode is sponsored by: POLSEN HEALTH: The compassionate health tracker. This week I'm joined by David Kessler, grief expert, author and one of the most important voices in the world on loss, healing and what it means to find meaning after the people we love are gone. We explore grief in all its forms, why we get it so wrong, and what it actually looks like to move through loss rather than around it. David Kessler co-authored On Grief and Grieving with Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and is the author of six books on grief and loss, including Finding Meaning, which adds a sixth stage to the five stages of grief. He is the founder of grief.com, one of the largest grief resources in the world, and has worked with thousands of people through loss — including after the death of his own son. He is widely regarded as the world's foremost expert on grief and has spent his career changing the way we understand and talk about one of the most universal human experiences. What we explore together: Why the five stages of grief were never meant to be linear — and what that means for how we heal What grief actually is, and why it extends far beyond death Why we are so bad at sitting with other people’s pain — and what to do instead The sixth stage of grief: finding meaning — what it is, and what it isn’t Why your loved one’s physical death is permanent, but your loss of hope is temporary What David learned about grief from losing his own son Why love is the one thing that never dies — and how that changes everything Love, Sarah Ann 💛My book 'Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Healthy-Shouldnt-Be-This-Hard-ebook/dp/B0G1DHNRV5 This episode is sponsored by: Polsen Health: The compassionate health tracker connecting body and mind with unique stress recovery insights so you can live fully today 👉 15% off with code LWBW15 at https://nowatch.com/ PULSETTO: Vagus nerve stimulation for stress, sleep and calm 👉 Use code SARAHANN at https://pulsetto.sjv.io/SARAHANN 👉 If this resonates, you can join the thousands who read The Compassionate Cure each week.https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/ Let's be friends!📷 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarahannmacklin/ 📹 Subscribe: https://youtube.com/@livewellbewellsarah 📱 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@livewellbewellpodcast 💌 Newsletter: https://sarahmacklin.substack.com Chapters 00:00 Introduction 03:07 Why the five stages of grief were never meant to be linear 05:52 What grief actually is — and why it goes beyond death 12:09 The chapter on anger and why it matters 14:53 Why we’re so bad at sitting with other people’s pain 18:10 There is no perfect way to grieve 20:54 Grief is universal — so why do we forget that? 23:58 When logic tries to fix what only feeling can heal 27:09 Pain and grief as transformation 29:54 The profound healing moment most people miss 32:55 Quieting the mind to stay present with loss 35:56 The goal of grief work: remembering with more love than pain 39:04 Allowing life to happen alongside grief 42:07 David’s personal loss and what it taught him 45:06 Being invested in life while knowing it is temporary 48:12 We are human beings — and we are going to get it wrong 53:52 Waking up after loss and what that first moment feels like 57:07 Finding community and connection through grief 65:56 Your loss of hope is temporary 69:12 Soulmates and what happens after loss 71:49 What is the worst kind of grief? 80:48 Love is what connects and heals us 83:59 The luxury of feelings in this generation 87:09 Final thoughts on living well and being well

This week I'm joined by Patric Gagne, author, self-identified sociopath and one of the most disarmingly honest voices on what it actually means to live with a personality most people fear and misunderstand. We explore sociopathy, empathy, emotion and what understanding the sociopathic mind can teach all of us about how we think, feel and make decisions. Patric Gagne is the author of Sociopath, a candid and surprisingly warm account of what life looks like from the inside of a personality disorder that pop culture has defined almost entirely through its most dangerous extremes. Unlike the sociopaths you see in crime dramas, Patric is self-aware, articulate and genuinely interested in changing the narrative around what sociopathy actually is and who it actually affects. What we explore together: What sociopathy actually is and why the pop culture version is almost entirely wrong Why not all sociopaths are dangerous and what the spectrum really looks like The difference between inherent emotions and social emotions and why it matters Why Patric doesn't need guilt or shame to know right from wrong How sociopaths experience relationships, love and connection differently What the sociopathic mind can teach neurotypical people about emotional regulation What it means to live well as someone whose brain works fundamentally differently Love, Sarah Ann 💛 My book 'Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Healthy-Shouldnt-Be-This-Hard-ebook/dp/B0G1DHNRV5 This episode is sponsored by:NOWATCH: The compassionate health tracker Connecting body and mind with unique stress recovery insights so you can live fully today👉 15% off with code LWBW15 at https://nowatch.com/ PULSETTO: Vagus nerve stimulation for stress, sleep and calm👉 Use code SARAHANN at https://pulsetto.sjv.io/SARAHANN The Great British Veg OutHow to support your gut, energy, and hormones by eating more, not less.👉 https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/p/t… Reset Your HealthIf your body feels off after stress, travel, or burnout, this is where to start.👉 https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/s/r... 👉 Practical beats perfect. This week I'm joined by Professor Sophie Scott, neuroscientist, stand-up comedian and Deputy Director of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, and someone who has dedicated her career to one of the most underrated forces in human life, laughter. We explore the science of laughter, why it matters more than we think, and what it is actually doing to our brains, our bodies and our relationships. Professor Sophie Scott is a Fellow of the Royal Society and one of the UK's leading voices on the neuroscience of laughter and communication. She has been named among the UK's top 100 scientists and is known for making complex science accessible and joyful including through her own stand-up comedy. She has spent decades studying why humans laugh, when we laugh and what happens in the brain when we do. What we explore together: -Why laughter is a social behaviour first and a response to humour second -What rats, chimpanzees and cows can teach us about why we laugh -What laughter actually does to the brain and body and why it is so good for us -Why we are 30 times more likely to laugh with other people than alone -The difference between fake laughter and real laughter and how your brain knows the difference -Why laughter is one of the most powerful tools we have for connection and resilience -What stand-up comedy taught a neuroscientist about human behaviour Love, Sarah Ann 💛 My book 'Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Healthy-Shouldnt-Be-This-Hard-ebook/dp/B0G1DHNRV5 This episode is sponsored by: NOWATCH: The compassionate health tracker Connecting body and mind with unique stress recovery insights so you can live fully today 👉 15% off with code LWBW15 at https://nowatch.com/ PULSETTO: Vagus nerve stimulation for stress, sleep and calm 👉 Use code SARAHANN at https://pulsetto.sjv.io/SARAHANN The Great British Veg Out How to support your gut, energy, and hormones by eating more, not less. 👉 https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/p/t… Reset Your Health If your body feels off after stress, travel, or burnout, this is where to start. 👉 https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/s/r... 👉 Practical beats perfect. ⚠️ This episode discusses antidepressants, mental health treatment, withdrawal and sensitive topics around psychiatric medication. Please seek professional guidance before making any changes to your medication. This week I'm joined by Dr Mark Horowitz, clinical research fellow in psychiatry, co-author of the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines, and one of the most important voices in the world right now on antidepressants and how to come off them safely. We explore the science behind antidepressants, what they actually do to the brain, and what nobody told you about coming off them. Dr Mark Horowitz is a clinical research fellow at University College London and North East London NHS Foundation Trust. He co-authored the Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines, which have begun to change clinical guidance on antidepressant withdrawal worldwide. His research on tapering and withdrawal has been published in leading medical journals and has directly influenced NHS and international prescribing guidelines. He founded the National Prescribing Support Service and has trained clinicians at Outro Health in America in safer tapering approaches. He has personal experience of antidepressant withdrawal, which led him to dedicate his career to helping others through the same process. What we explore together: Why 1 in 6 people in England are on antidepressants — and whether we are overprescribing What antidepressants actually do to the brain and why the chemical imbalance theory is misleading Why the clinical trial data on antidepressants is far less impressive than most people realise The emotional blunting effect — what it is, why it happens and what to do about it Why 85% of people recover from depression within 12 months with no intervention at all What withdrawal actually feels like — and why doctors so often get it wrong How to taper safely and why doing it too fast causes so much unnecessary suffering What the alternatives to antidepressants are and why they are rarely offered first Love, Sarah Ann 💛 Learn more about Dr Mark Horowitz and his work:Dr Horowitz on X: https://x.com/markhoroDr Horowitz's website: https://markhorowitz.org/Outro Health's virtual tapering clinic (US): https://www.outro.com/ My book 'Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Healthy-Shouldnt-Be-This-Hard-ebook/dp/B0G1DHNRV5 This episode is sponsored by:NOWATCH: The compassionate health tracker Connecting body and mind with unique stress recovery insights so you can live fully today👉 15% off with code LWBW15 at https://nowatch.com/ PULSETTO: Vagus nerve stimulation for stress, sleep and calm👉 Use code SARAHANN at https://pulsetto.sjv.io/SARAHANN The Great British Veg OutHow to support your gut, energy, and hormones by eating more — not less.👉 https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/p/t… Reset Your HealthIf your body feels off after stress, travel, or burnout — this is where to start.👉 https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/s/r... 👉 Practical beats perfect. This week I'm joined by Arthur C. Brooks, Harvard professor, bestselling author and one of the world's leading experts on the science of human happiness, and someone who has spent his life answering one of the most fundamental questions we all ask and what does it actually mean to live well? We explore happiness, meaning, love and what the science really says about building a life that feels worth living. Arthur Brooks is a professor at Vanderbilt University and senior fellow at Harvard Business School. He is the author of 16 books including three number one New York Times bestsellers. He has spent decades studying happiness not as a feeling but as a skill and teaching people how to practise it. What we explore together: Why happiness is not a destination and what the arrival fallacy is really costing you The four idols your brain tells you will make you happy and why they never do What the neuroscience of love actually looks like and the two things that keep couples bonded How the failure journal works and why writing down your disappointments makes you happier Why meaning and happiness are not the same thing and which one actually lasts What it means to love and be loved and why Arthur believes that's the whole answer Love, Sarah Ann 💛 My book 'Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Healthy-Shouldnt-Be-This-Hard-ebook/dp/B0G1DHNRV5 This episode is sponsored by: NOWATCH: The compassionate health tracker Connecting body and mind with unique stress recovery insights so you can live fully today 👉 15% off with code LWBW15 at https://nowatch.com/ The Great British Veg Out 👉 https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/p/t… Reset Your Health 👉 https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/s/r... 👉 Free 5-recipe PDF: https://sarahannmacklin.com/5_free_recipes 👉 The Compassionate Cure: https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/ Let's be friends! 📷 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarahannmacklin/ 📹 Subscribe: https://youtube.com/@livewellbewellsarah 🐦 Twitter: https://x.com/SarahAnnMacklin 📱 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@livewellbewellpodcast 💌 Newsletter: https://sarahmacklin.substack.com/ Chapters 00:00 Introduction 02:59 Arthur's personal journey and finding purpose 05:59 How grief can be a doorway to meaning 09:07 Why knowing everything doesn't make you happy 15:04 What Stoicism teaches us about happiness 20:57 The four idols — money, pleasure, power, fame 23:57 Why the four idols are a dangerous trap 33:00 Arthur's worst day and what it taught him 38:57 The arrival fallacy 42:03 The neuroscience of dopamine 48:00 The failure journal 54:07 The neuroscience of love — oxytocin, touch and eye contact 57:03 How to keep connection alive long term 65:58 Why the silent treatment is so damaging 72:02 How your emotions are made in the brain 78:00 Finding meaning beyond achievement 87:08 Where Sarah is two years on 93:00 What saved Viktor Frankl 98:28 Final thoughts on living well and being well
